Fox McCloud is a young pilot and lead member of a mercenary team, known as "
Star Fox". The only son of the famous James McCloud, he followed in his fathers footsteps as an honorable pilot. He and his closest friends, Bill Grey and Slippy Toad, joined the academy in his youth, excelling at his flight training. Shortly later in his academy years, he encountered
Falco Lombardi, a former gang member. Fox took him under his wing and turned him into a formidable pilot.
Five years after the
Lylat System was at the brink of near extinction, James McCloud, Pigma Dengar, and Peppy Hare, who at the time formed the Star Fox Team, investigated the planet Venom after hearing suspicious activity. Pigma betrayed the team when James and Peppy found out that
Andross was the source of the unusual activity. Peppy, who barely escaped Venom with his life, fled home to Corneria. Saddened by the death of his wingman, Peppy Hare informed Fox McCloud of his father's tragic death. Filled with grief, he dropped out from the academy to pursue the life of a mercenary, accompanied by Falco Lombardi and Slippy Toad and Peppy Hare, who reformed themselves as the new Star Fox Team.

About three years later,
General Pepper called in Star Fox Team when Andross launched an all out offensive on Lylat System in an attempt to overthrow the Cornerian Army and take over the system. Fox McCloud led his team through the onslaught of the war through routes all over the system, taking out Andross's Bio-Weapons and
Lieutenants in Lylat's strongholds. In the midst of the battle, Fox encountered his old friend, Bill Grey, on Katina, which was under heavy fire by the Venomian Saucerer in an attempt to annihilate the Katina Outpost. His friendship was revealed, commenting, "Is that you? I can't believe it!" as Bill mentioned catching up on old times after their mission. Other allies came to help Fox, including a pink furred feline named Katt Monroe. Fox also had his share of foes with his encounter of an old rival,
Wolf O'Donnell and his mercenary team,
Star Wolf, who were hired by Andross to kill Star Fox. When Star Fox advanced through the enemy's armada, they reached the planet Venom, battling through the dangerous obstacles from wave of attacks to the harsh terrains. After their fight with Golemech and Star Fox's re-encounter with Star Wolf, it was Fox McCloud who dove into the depths of Venom's underground base to confront Andross. Through the ardouous battle, Andross was defeated, and Fox was barely left standing victorious before almost getting caved in from the self destruct of the base, barely escaping through the labyrinth shafts; Fox was convinced it was his father's presence that helped him escape.

Eight Years after the Lylat Wars, the Star Fox Team stumbled upon the planet Sauria. In dire need of help to save the planet from being torn apart, mentioned by General Pepper, the maturer Fox McCloud disembarked from the cockpit of his
Arwing onto the surface of what was know at the time as "
Dinosaur Planet", where he encountered the Queen EarthWalker and Prince Tricky, a tag-along to help Fox restore and breath life back into the Spellstones and place back the
Krazoa Spirits in their rightful places that help force the magic from tearing the planet apart from its core. He thwarted
General Scales plan of making himself the domint power of Sauria. Along the way, Fox encountered a blue vixen named Krystal, who was also in need of the five remaining Krazoa Spirits to keep her alive imprisoned in a quartz crystal. After releasing the last Krazoa spirirt, Fox realized he was duped by helping revive Andross from the dead, which was his plan from the start, and wreaking havoc on the Lylat System once again. Falco (who, at the time, left Star Fox to go his own way) helped Fox take down Andross once again. With the reinstatement of Falco Lombardi and the addition of Krystal to the team, Star Fox used the money that Fox was paid for the improvements and repairs to the Great Fox and the Arwings.

One year had passed after the Sauria incident with Andross. Star Fox went into battle with
Andrew Oikionny's fleet outside the planet Fortuna. Their confrontation with Andrew was short lived when it was surprisingly interrupted by the attack of an enemy which only ROB/NUS 64 identifies as an "
Aparoid" from Corneria's first encounter fifteen years ago. The Lylat System was threatened by the Aparoids, which were able to take over any entity of living or non-living material as its own host. Fox McCloud and his team were sent in to eradicate the threat, taking back one planet at a time, finding the last piece of the core memory from the boss Aparoid from Katina, and bring the invasion to an end. After halting their advance on the Cornerian Capital, Star Fox, Star Wolf and the Cornerian Army worked together in a joint assault on the Aparoid's home world. It was Fox who made the final blow and ended the Queen Aparoid's rein of sentience-controlling terror.

A year after the events of the Aparoid invasion Fox McCloud and Krystal had affectionate feelings for one another and started to build a relationship with each other. However there relationship went shaky when Fox's feeling for her were more than he could bare to see her risking her life as a mercenary and broke up shortly after forcing Krystal off the team. Soonafter the exaustion and overwhling stress of the team was too much to bare and the rest of he Star Fox team went their sepreate ways, leaving Fox McCloud the only remaining member. It was untill war broke out when Corneria was under attack by the Anglars, Fox McCloud was sent in alone to handle the threat. Fox runs into some old friends along the way as he advances to each planet vanquishing the Anglar threat, untill he finally reached the planet Venom to defeat the Angular Emperor.
