"A medium-sized group of planets in orbit around the twinkling star Lylat. Its residents leisurely spent their time taking pleasure in its peaceful environment. That is, until HE showed up . . ." ~ Star Fox 64 Japanese Manual.

The Lylat System is the main place setting for the Star Fox series. It is a star system comprised of medium-size planets orbiting the star Lylat. This sixteen planet system is currently under control of the Cornerian Army. In the past, the Lylat System was at the pinnacle of a perfect society, until it was nearly destroyed by Andross's experiments. Five years later, the Lylat System would spend the next few years locked in constant war between Corneria and the Venomian Empire. Because it was a war fought throughout the system to reclaim Lylat, it had been referred to many as the "Lylat Wars".

History of the Lylat System

Pre-Lylat Wars

The Lylat System was once at a pinnacle of peace. General Pepper had been announced as the Commander-in-Chief of the Cornerian Defense Force, making Corneria the center of the system's control. Cornerian Chief Research-and-Developer Andross's ambition towards his dangerous experiments caused a near cataclysmic fatality of the Lylat System. What was once a thriving system was now left scarred, fighting to sustain life as it remained at the brink of near extinction.

The Lylat Wars

Five years after the Andross was exiled for nearly destroying the Lylat System, there had been strange activity coming from the planet Venom. Andross was starting his full scale invasion on the decaying system. The destruction of the system had worsened with the creation of his bioweapons and Lieutenants, stationed in all parts of Lylat. Corneria hoped to restore the Lylat System by defending Andross at all costs. With the help of Star Fox, they prevented Andross's ambition of ruling over Lylat.

The Second Lylat War (Star Fox 2)

In Star Fox 2, Andross returned once again to thrown the Lylat System into peril. Stationing his assault from a floating fortress/city called "Astropolis" above Lylat, he launched ships to create Inter-Planetary Ballistic Missile Bases on several planets of the Lylat System. Then, using the IPBMs from the newly created bases alongside large battleships and assorted fighter craft, launched direct assaults on Corneria. Once again, with the help of Star Fox, now with 2 new members, Miyu and Fay, Andross was defeated, this time forever.

The Sauria Incident

Eight years after the defeat of Andross, the Lylat System had begun to rebuild itself from the Lylat Wars. However, a problem arose on Sauria: the planet began breaking apart in 4 large chunks. Star Fox, desperate for money, was hired again by the Cornerian Army to remedy the problem. Fox McCloud went to the surface, without weapons, in order to solve it. Mid-way through claiming all the SpellStones and replacing them in their pedistals, he was contacted by a Krazoa Spirit released by a mysterious blue vixen before he arrived (who he found out later was named Krystal). The spirit asked him to retrieve all the remaining spirits and return them to the Krazoa Palace, on top of returning the SpellStones. He did both, which undid the damage done to Sauria, but upon releasing the final Krazoa Spirit into the shrine, Andross revived himself using the Krazoa Spirits and Krystal as a channel for their power. After saving Krystal, Fox took to his Arwing and followed Andross into space. Much like at the end of the Lylat Wars and this time with the help of a now-returned Falco Lombardi, he defeated the mad scientist, this time once and for all.

The Aparoid Invasion

A year after the Sauria Incident, another threat loomed in the Lylat System: the Aparoids, which had begun their invasion in an attempt to assimilate the Lylat System. Once again, the Cornerian Army hired Star Fox, now with Krystal in the pilot seat and Peppy in pseudo-retirement from flying on-board Great Fox giving the team advice. After repelling several invasions on different planets, the Aparoids launched an all-out assault on Corneria, destroying Corneria City and toppling much of the Cornerian Defense Force and the government. Upon the defeat of the invading Aparoids and the Aparoids controlling General Pepper, the remainder of the Cornerian Army and Cornerian Defense Force and Team Star Fox launched a counter-attack on the Aparoid Homeworld, outside the reaches of the Lylat System. After breaking a hole into the core of the planet and with the help of Team Star Wolf diverting the majority of tailing Aparoids, Star Fox destroyed the Aparoid Queen and the homeworld, effectively erradicating the Aparoid threat.

The Anglar Directorate

Two or three years after the destruction of the parasitic Aparoids, another threat arose from the planet Venom. In its newly formed toxic seas, the Anglar Directorate, a race of fish-people, had begun amassing themselves in a bid to take control of the Lylat System. Upon being told that Corneria had been occupied by the Anglar, Fox McCloud and ROB-NUS 64 began trying to reamass the Star Fox Team, which had parted ways, in an attempt to defeat the new threat. Much like the Lylat Wars, the Anglar Directorate was defeated.

(It is unsure how they were defeated, as Star Fox Command has no defined ending.)

Controversy on Lylat

Many fans of the Star Fox genre have debated whether the Lylat System is showing forms of consistency. Many question if the Lylat System lacks consistency because of the addition of newer planet and subtraction or changes in planets that made of appearances in the past. The Lylat System has also drawn controversy to the basic mapping of the systems arrangement of planets. Some question it may be a possibility that Lylat is a dual star system while others believe that its arrangement of planets share irregular orbits.
